Mountain Safety and Prevention

Before setting off, make sure you are properly informed.

  • How can I prepare for an excursion in a responsible and well-informed way?

It is good practice to check the weather forecast, route conditions, avalanche bulletin, and the recommendations issued by the Tavolo Tecnico della Prudenza (Technical Advisory Board for Mountain Safety), which brings together the organisations committed to promoting safety awareness in the mountains.

  • How can I prevent situations that may require mountain rescue?

Whenever possible, make your best to avoid accidents in the mountains. Some essential safety behaviours include:

    • Checking weather forecasts, the Trentino avalanche bulletin, and current route conditions
    • Choosing itineraries suited to your experience (paths, via ferratas, canyons, caves)
    • Planning timings and return routes carefully, and carrying appropriate equipment
    • Not underestimating fatigue, altitude, or the risk of becoming a missing person due to a delayed return.

Prevention significantly reduces the likelihood of having to call for rescue, especially in avalanche terrain, canyons, or exposed areas.

  • Where can I find reliable weather forecasts for Trentino?

When planning a trip into the mountains, it is important to consult updated and official sources.
You can check current weather conditions on MeteoTrentino, which provides precise, territory-specific data.

  • Where can I find the updated avalanche bulletin for Trentino?

To assess snowpack stability and avalanche risk, we recommend consulting the official portal valanghe.report, which provides daily bulletins, maps, and detailed analyses for the Alpine region.

  • What are the main safety rules to follow in the mountains?

Up-to-date guidance on good practices for summer and winter mountain activities is published by VisitTrentino, in collaboration with the organisations that are part of the Tavolo Tecnico della Prudenza.

  • Where can I find official material on mountain safety?

Information resources produced by the Tavolo Tecnico della Prudenza (videos, infographics and guidelines) are available online on institutional portals such as VisitTrentino and other partner websites. All materials are shared and validated at provincial level.

  • What is speleological rescue and how can cave accidents be prevented?

Speleological rescue is the activity carried out by the CNSAS dedicated to cave rescue, including within the Dolomites and the Trentino area.
For safe cave exploration, it is essential to:

    • Enter only with experienced individuals or organised groups
    • Carry adequate and fully functioning equipment
    • Always inform someone of your planned route and expected return time

Even underground, prudence is your first safety tool.

  • What is the mountain emergency number in Trentino, and when should I call it?

In Trentino, the emergency number for mountain rescue is 112 (one-one-two).

You should call when the situation can no longer be managed independently: injuries, illness, mountain emergencies, missing persons, avalanche risk, difficulties on via ferratas or in canyons. It is better to ask for help early, before conditions worsen.

  • What information should I give when calling 112 in the mountains?

When calling 112 for Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico Trentino assistance, it is important to provide essential information:

    • Your exact location (path, summit, route, valley, any known landmarks)
    • What has happened and how many people are involved
    • The condition of those involved (injuries, level of consciousness, immobilised,
      hypothermia, etc.)
    • Any additional hazards (unstable snow, falling rocks, incoming darkness)

This information helps the operations centre to activate the nearest rescue stations.
